Margin loans allow investors to borrow against existing portfolio assets to buy additional securities. At Interactive Brokers Pro, the current USD margin rate is 5.12% for balances up to $100,000, 4.62% for $100,000-$1,000,000, and 4.37% for $1,000,000-$50,000,000 (as of May 2026).

Options provide leveraged exposure through call and put contracts. This article focuses on leveraged ETFs and margin loans - the most accessible forms for individual investors building toward financial freedom.

These are structurally different tools. A leveraged ETF contains its own internal leverage mechanism. A margin loan applies external leverage to an unleveraged position. Combining both - buying TQQQ on margin - multiplies risk in ways that most discussions of leveraged investing never address directly.

Benchmark context

The S&P 500 (SPY) returned approximately 13.69% annualized over the same 10-year period that TQQQ returned 44.53%. UPRO returned approximately 30% annualized versus the S&P 500’s 13-15%.

The critical caveat: both TQQQ and UPRO were launched in 2009-2010, at the beginning of the longest bull market in modern history. Neither fund existed during the 2000-2002 dot-com crash. Simulated backtests suggest TQQQ would have lost approximately 99.9% of its value during the Nasdaq’s 2000-2002 collapse.

How volatility decay works

The mathematical formula for decay:

Expected decay = L × (L-1)/2 × variance

Where L = leverage factor and variance = squared daily volatility.

For a 3x fund: 3 × (3-1)/2 × variance = 3 × variance per day

For comparison, a 2x fund decays at 2 × variance per day. A 3x fund decays at 4.5 times the rate of a 2x fund - the relationship is quadratic, not linear.

Concrete example

An index starts at 100, rises 10% to 110, then falls 9.09% back to 100 - a flat round trip. For the investor in the plain index fund: no change, exactly 0%.

For the 3x leveraged ETF investor:

For margin lending to generate positive carry, the portfolio’s return must exceed the borrowing cost. At IBKR Pro rates:

  • Borrowing $500,000 at 4.62% costs approximately $23,100/year
  • Invested in SPY (~13% historical average annual return): expected return on borrowed capital = $65,000 - $23,100 = $41,900 positive carry in an average year
  • In a -20% year: loss on borrowed capital = $100,000 + $23,100 in interest = $123,100 loss on $500,000 borrowed

The margin call mechanism

When the value of portfolio collateral falls below the broker’s maintenance margin requirement, a margin call forces the investor to either deposit additional funds or sell positions at current (depressed) prices.

  • If UPRO falls 81.66%: UPRO position becomes $18,340

Investors entering 3x leveraged ETF positions in 2026 should model expected returns using a hurdle rate approximately 6-7 percentage points higher than equivalent models from the 2015-2021 period.


Tax Treatment for Leveraged ETFs

The tax drag in a taxable account

TQQQ and UPRO generate two categories of taxable events:

For Non-U.S. Investors: Specific Considerations

1. Currency risk on top of leverage

TQQQ and UPRO are USD-denominated instruments. A non-U.S. investor holding TQQQ in a local-currency account is running two leveraged positions simultaneously: 3x Nasdaq-100 exposure plus unhedged USD/local-currency exposure.

The USD weakened approximately 8-10% against major currencies in 2023. An investor in TQQQ who earned 68% in USD terms received approximately 58-60% in EUR, GBP, or AUD terms.
